How to land a Brand Partnership as an Artist?
Why are collaboration with Brands are so important for Artist? It is crucial for illustrators to build their portfolio, establish credibility, and go seek new opportunities.
This blog post aims to guide artists on how to secure their first brand collaboration.
We will define what a brand activation is, provide examples of successful collaborations, and offer tips on how artists can effectively land a brand activation opportunity.
What Is a Brand Partnership (Activation) For Artist?
A brand partnership (activation) for artists is a collaboration between an artist and a brand where the artist is hired or sponsored to create artwork, designs, or other creative content for the brand’s marketing or advertising campaigns. The goal is to leverage the artist’s unique style and aesthetic to promote the brand’s products or services, while also providing exposure and new opportunities for the artist. Here are a few iconic brand partnerships that I personally love, which can serve as great sources of inspiration:
Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama: The luxury fashion brand collaborated with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama to create a collection featuring her iconic polka-dot designs.
Nike x KAWS: Nike teamed up with artist KAWS to create limited-edition sneakers featuring his signature characters.
Bil Donovan x Dior’s Artist In Residence Bil Donovan a Mentor and one of my favorite Fashion Illustrators became Diors first Artist In Residence
Why should Artist Collaborate with Brands?
Brand partnerships or activations can be incredibly beneficial for artists. They provide exposure, credibility, dinero, creative collaboration, and community involvement, all of which can help to support the artist’s career and further their success.
The Right Exposure: Partnering with a well-known brand can provide exposure to a wider audience that the artist may not have been able to reach otherwise. This can help to increase their visibility and grow their community. (Never agree to work for free in exchange for exposure, and do not allow any brand to exploit you by requesting unpaid work. )
Building Credibility: Aligning with a reputable brand can enhance the artist’s credibility and reputation. This can help to establish the artist as a legitimate and serious artist and can lead to more opportunities for future collaborations.
Financial Stability as an Artist: Brand partnerships can be an additional source of income for artists, particularly those who are still building their careers. They can provide a steady stream of revenue that can help to support the artist’s creative endeavors.
Creative collaboration: Partnering with a brand can provide opportunities for the artist to collaborate on creative projects, such as creating branded content or merchandise. This can help to expand the artist’s creative portfolio and provide new and exciting opportunities for growth.
Community Building: Many brands have a strong presence in the community and are involved in various charitable or philanthropic initiatives. Partnering with a brand can provide the artist with an opportunity to give back and support important causes.
Tips for Landing Your First Illustrator Brand Activation:
Research: Identify brands that align with your style and values, and research their products, target audience, and marketing strategies. This will help you tailor your pitch to their specific needs and interests. Stay up-to-date on industry trends: Stay informed about the latest trends and developments in the illustration and branding industry to stay ahead of the competition.
Build your portfolio: Create a comprehensive portfolio that showcases your illustration style, skills, and what you LOVE to create. Your portfolio should be easy to navigate, visually appealing, and highlight your ability to create illustrations that are what you enjoy working on.
Market yourself effectively: Utilize your social media platforms, walk into boutiques and leave a business card with the manager, and find opportunities to showcase your work locally.
Network: Attend events, workshops, and conferences related to illustration, branding, and marketing to build connections and network with potential clients. Participate in online communities, such as illustration forums or social media groups, to make yourself visible to potential clients and showcase your work.
Make contact: Reach out to the brands you’re interested in working with, either through email, phone, or in person, and introduce yourself and your work. Provide a brief overview of your experience and what you have to offer, and express your interest in collaborating with them on a brand activation project.
Present a proposal: Once you have established initial contact, present a proposal that outlines your ideas for the brand activation and how your illustration skills can help bring their brand to life. Provide a budget estimate, timeline, and examples of your previous work that are relevant to the brand. (P.S. For Prototypes please never leave it behind instead make sure you take it with you after showing the brand.)
Know your worth: Have a clear understanding of your rates and be confident in negotiating with brands. Don’t undervalue your work, but also be open to negotiation. Remember to be professional, friendly, and respectful in all your interactions, and be prepared to discuss the details of the project and negotiate terms. Building strong relationships with brands can lead to ongoing work and collaborations.
"Collaborating with Tiffany & Co for a Heartwarming Valentine's Day
As an illustrator, I have always been a huge fan of the timeless elegance and romance that Tiffany & Co represents. So, when the opportunity arose to work with them on a special Valentine’s Day activation in Tampa, I jumped at the chance for this brand partnership.
The goal of the activation was to create a memorable experience for couples on the most romantic day of the year. My role was to create live digital illustrations showcasing the love stories of real-life couples. The stories were heartwarming and touching, and I was inspired to create illustrations that captured the unique essence of each couple or loved one. I used my digital illustration style of bold patches of color to create illustrations that were both romantic and playful. All illustrations were created on my iPad Pro using the Procreate App and Apple Pencil.
The love stories throughout the day were simply beautiful. A boyfriend was planning to surprise his girlfriend with a Tiffany Essential Pearls Necklace, and the Tiffany’s team recommended that I illustrate it from a photo of the girlfriend. I quickly got to work and sketched the pearl necklace around her neck. With the help of Michele, I printed the illustration and packaged it for the client. The smile that lit up his face when he saw the illustration was why I love what I do – bringing joy to people’s lives through my illustrations.

Another heartwarming story of a boyfriend who planned to bring his girlfriend to Tiffany & Co. blindfolded as a Valentine’s Day surprise. He shared with me that his girlfriend lost her mother at a young age. She inherited a Return to Tiffany® Oval Tag Necklace from her mother that she never takes off – even sleeping with it on. I immediately illustrated her wearing the necklace she cherished so much and I am so happy to be part of this stunning surprise when her loving boyfriend presents her with the illustration.
Working with Tiffany & Co on this activation was a dream come true for me, and I was proud to be part of a project that celebrated the beauty and power of love. I’m grateful for the opportunity to use my illustration skills to bring joy and happiness to others, and I look forward to future collaborations with the brand.
To all the lovebirds out there, Happy Valentine’s Day! To my girls Happy Galentines Day! May your love stories be filled with joy, laughter, and a touch of magic, just like the ones I was lucky enough to illustrate for Tiffany & Co. Thank you so much to Katie and the entire team in at Tiffany & Co. International Plaza and Bay Street Mall in Tampa. It was such an honor to serve your team.

If an artist from humble beginnings like myself can secure brand activation opportunities, I am confident that you can too. The biggest obstacle we face is often our own self-doubt. We may feel like we need a perfect website or extensive experience to land our first client, but that’s not necessarily the case. I actually landed my first collaboration with Bloomingdale’s through my Instagram account and referral from my incredible amiga and fashion blogger Kelly Saks.
It’s important to keep in mind that rejection is a normal part of the process. I’ve faced countless rejections, but in between those, I secured some powerful collaborations. Keep practicing your craft every day and focus on improving. If you follow the tips mentioned above, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can land your first collaboration.
If you’re an artist who’s interested in landing a brand partnership, I hope you’ve learned something useful. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments.
